The 10-Minute Crochet Coaster: A Foolproof Pattern for Absolute Beginners

“This easy crochet round coaster tutorial for beginners shows how to make a simple acrylic yarn coaster using double crochet stitches.”

If you have ten minutes and a scrap of yarn, you have enough to make something beautiful. Many beginners get overwhelmed by massive projects, but the secret to staying motivated is the quick win.

These modern, circular coasters are the perfect "palette cleanser" project. They teach you how to work in the round and manage your tension. Best of all, you'll have a functional, handmade set for your home in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee.

             Materials & Abbreviations

What You’ll Need

Yarn: Medium weight (Level 4) cotton yarn.

Hook: 5.0mm (H) wooden or ergonomic hook.

Tools: Yarn needle and sharp scissors.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

MR: Magic Ring

ch: chain

dc: double crochet

sl st: slip stitch

st: stitch

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: The Base

Round 1: Make a MR. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch). Work 12 dc into the ring. Pull the tail tight to close the center hole. Sl st to the first dc to join. (12 sts)

Your first round should look like a tight, neat circle.

Step 2: Increasing

Round 2: Ch 2. Work 2 dc into every stitch around. Sl st to the top of the first dc to join. (24 sts)

Round 2 doubles your stitch count to keep the coaster flat.

         Step 3: Growing the Circle

Round 3: The First Increase Round

Ch 2 or 3 to start your round.

Work 2 double crochet (dc) into the next stitch, then 1 double crochet (dc) into the following stitch.

Repeat this sequence (2 dc in one stitch, 1 dc in the next) all the way around the full round. This consistent increase is the secret to keeping your round flat crochet coasters perfectly flat without warping!

Round 4: Final Expansion

Ch 2 or 3 to begin.

Work 2 double crochet (dc) into the first stitch, then work 1 double crochet (dc) into each of the next two stitches.

Repeat this pattern (2 dc in one stitch, followed by 1 dc in each of the next two stitches) around the entire circle to complete your easy crochet coasters.

Optional: Fasten off here and weave in your ends with a yarn needle, or add a simple slip stitch border to give your finished crochet coaster a perfectly clean, professional edge!

         Pro-Tip for Beginners

"If your coaster is curling up like a bowl, your tension is too tight! Try to relax your grip on the yarn or move up to a 5.5mm hook."

             Conclusion

Crocheting doesn't have to be complicated to be beautiful. This project is proof that with just three rounds, you can create something professional and gift-ready.
